Starting From Scratch: The First Big Break

Back in 2001, Christie and her partner Sandra decided to build their first spec home in Austin, Texas. They had the land, the plans, and the vision—but no bank would give them a loan. After knocking on every bank door in town, a small neighborhood bank finally gave them their first shot.

That first house was a million-dollar property, a bold move at the time. The market quickly turned, and it took over a year to sell. Christie had to pick up extra work while Sandra continued teaching and coaching. It was a hard lesson in patience and perseverance, but it laid the foundation for their future in real estate.

Surviving Market Crashes and Setbacks

Christie’s success didn’t come without challenges. When the housing market crashed in 2008, she and Sandra were stuck with a massive multi-million dollar spec home that took 541 days to sell. With no pool or yard crew, they maintained the property themselves until it finally sold—to a famous rock star.

Instead of giving up, they used that season to learn. Christie credits those hard years with teaching her resilience, discipline, and the importance of sacrifice. As she says, “Financial rewards rarely come without risk. You have to be willing to sacrifice, to roll the dice, and to keep moving forward.”

Family Roots and Lessons in Tenacity

Christie’s drive didn’t come out of nowhere. She watched her mother leave an unhealthy marriage with nothing, raise two children, and build a thriving real estate career. From her grandfather, she learned to never see herself as “less than” in a man’s world. Those lessons shaped her mindset and gave her the courage to pursue entrepreneurship in male-dominated industries like construction and land development.

From Homes to Hospitality: Building Buddy’s Backyard RV Resort

After years of building homes, Christie and Sandra set out on a new adventure—developing an RV resort in the Texas Hill Country. Inspired by their own RV travels, they envisioned a serene retreat where families could gather and explore.

But developing raw land in Travis County came with major hurdles. Local opposition, legal battles, and political roadblocks nearly stopped the project. Christie recalls spending more than $150,000 in legal fees just to earn the right to develop her own land. Despite the challenges, they pressed forward and successfully launched Buddy’s Backyard RV Resort, a thriving destination today.

Redefining Financial Freedom

For Christie, financial freedom isn’t just about money—it’s about choice. It’s having the time and space to try new things, give back to friends and community, and step into new opportunities without fear. She’s discovered that wealth is about alignment, intention, and the courage to pursue what lights you up.

Her advice for women stepping into investing or entrepreneurship?

> Start small. “Don’t bite off more than you can chew.”

> Be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

> Learn from failure. Every setback is just data for your next step.
